Another Mans Treasure (Sextape Vol.1)
Another Mans Treasure (Sextape Vol.1) is the debut mixtape of Big Bad Baragon released independently on April 17th, 2013.
Background
Another Mans Treasure initially began as a compilation encompassing Baragon's early work, mostly with unreleased and rerecorded materials. The first song recorded was "Chill With Me" in 2010 (although it went through several redo's before becoming the song on the tape), the final song recorded was "845 in Newburgh", finalized only a few days prior to release. Due to his affinity for the old school, the first half of the mixtape would be comprised of material with a pre 2000 sound, and the other half would be built around a more modern sound. As the track selection and recording processes progressed, Baragon decided to do away with this idea, because it limited his creativity and worked against a cohesive sound. Baragon ultimately decided to lean towards an older, sample heavy sound as it was more comfortable and familiar to him.
Features
With the exception of Na’Cir Jahmill & Kool G Rap, features were comprised entirely of BlueHeartFam members and Baragon’s high school friends. The only member of BlueHeartFam who wasn’t on the mixtape was Rygon. The first feature to be done was Jean Paul Viteri’s verse on “B.O.N.G” which has been recorded originally in 2010, and rerecorded in 2012. The Kool G Rap feature was obtained thru an association with his upstart label, Full Mettle Entertainment, of which Baragon is a member. Although the tape appears to be feature heavy, only 4 of them are musical features, half of those being MCs delivering verses, and the other half are singers delivering hooks. The rest of the features are used for skits or adlibs.
Production
Most of the production on Another Mans Treasure is original, with only 4 of the 16 tracks being previously released industry instrumentals. The majority of production was done by Big Bad Baragon, who often collaborated with various producers to enhance his sound, being that he had no equipment with which to make beats. Hexsagon fully produces "Intro" & "Hustle", making him the second most frequent producer on the Mixtape. The production on the mixtape is based primarily off of sampling more melodic records to achieve a modern day 90s inspired sound as opposed to a bass-heavy, electronic sound.
Title & Cover Art
The cover art was taken by Dreadful Controversy, and edited by Jacob Kondrath, both of whom are members of the BlueHeartFam and featured on the mixtape. The title "Another Mans Treasure" comes from the phrase, "One mans trash, is another mans treasure", which goes hand in hand with the initial concept of redoing older songs (trash) to make the acceptable for release (treasure). This is the reason that Baragon is standing in a garbage can. The "Sextape" came from a joke Baragon made prior to the release of the mixtape, "I'm going to call my mixtape a sextape, 'cause everybody's going to f**k with it". The albums featured on the cover are (from left to right) Ghostface's "Supreme Clientele", Big Daddy Kane's "Long Live the Kane", Kool G Raps "Killer Kuts", Nas' "Illmatic" & Kanye West's "Graduation". Baragon did this as a way to pay homage to some of the pioneers who have influenced him.
