Interview
(Pulled from now defunct hip hop blog, Rhythms N Rhymes)
Q. Why don’t you start us off by telling us about your background; how’d you get started in the music industry?
A: Crazy story, my parents never let me listen to rap but I would listen to my homies Eminem CD on the bus; the Slim Shady LP, I played the hell out of it. But around 2004 I was at a funeral, and I was with an older homie named David Bane, he wrote a line and I wrote one to rhyme with it, ever since then I was hooked to it!
Q. You have an interesting name, what does it mean?
A: I named myself Baragon because when I was younger I listened to mostly Wu Tang & MF DOOM, Wu Tang Clan members usually name themselves after dudes from Karate movies or whatever, and DOOM took his name from the Fantastic Four comic, and he has an alias from the Godzilla movies; King Geedorah. I took Baragon from Godzilla movies because he stays underground and breaths fire when he battles people up top, I listen to more underground hip hop, but I can still spit fire on the mainstream side. The Big Bad comes from me wanting to differentiate myself from the actual monster, also so people can google me and all that. Baragon is also short for Baragontana, a fusion of the monster and the movie character Tony Montana. If I break it down my name means B.ringing I.n G.rands, B.agging A.ll D.imes, B.eating A.verage R.appers A.nd G.unning O.n N.egroes T.hat. A.re N.ot A.uthentic.
Q. Any musical inspirations? Who are your favorite rappers or overall musical artists of all time?
A: My top 5 MC list in order is Ghostface Killah, Big Daddy Kane, MF DOOM, Kool G Rap & The Notorious BIG. Other artists I like would be Al Green, James Brown, Blink-182 ( I sampled them for “Angie” ), Al Jarreau (sampled him for "StreetLife"), Patti Austin, whole bunch of people, but mostly Hip Hop artists. Stevie Wonder may be my favorite overall musician of all time, though. I’m inspired by a lot of the local acts too, the other up and comers around me that are putting it down in Newburgh and elsewhere, I see y’all!
Q. One person to feature on a track. Who would it be?
A: Man, probably Big Daddy Kane. I’d love to do a rap version of James Browns “Sexmachine” with him, no homo. I’ve done one with Kool G Rap and that was amazing, too. I want to do something with Ghostface so I could flip the Supreme Clientele style of rhyming, it’s too many OGs I’d love to work with.
Q. What’s next for Baragon? Any plans for upcoming albums, concerts? What are you working on right now?
A: Working on my mixtape, “Another Mans Treasure”. It’s almost done! Come back to the site when it drops! I’ve got my own album I’m working on, I’m doing lots of production on there and it’s sounding real good. I’m working with my artist Jean Paul Viteri on his mixtape album, real great music there, can’t wait ‘til it drops. I’m working on an album with my man DJ Husky, straight hardcore rap there. I got something in the works with DJ Bazooka Joe & Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind formally of Jedi Mind Tricks. Lot on my plate but I’m a fat guy so I’m used to that!
Q. Hottest chick in the world right now straight up. Who is it?
A: If not me then Masiela Lusha, the girl from George Lopez. I can’t wait to meet her!
Q. Where do you see yourself 5 or 10 years down the road?
A: If I’m not in jail then I want to be 100lbs thinner, 1000 times wiser, a million dollars richer, and a billion times nicer!
Q. If you had to pick one, what is your favorite song and favorite movie of all time.
A: My favorite song is “Dancing Queen” by ABBA or "True To Your Heart" by Stevie Wonder & 98 Degrees. My favorite movie is Rocky, the whole series, that’s why I call myself Papi Balboa! All six of them joints is hard.
Q. What do you think your greatest strengths are?
A: I’d say the best thing about me is my ability to adapt, I prefer the more vintage hip hop sound over the newer stuff but I can get busy on the newer stuff and shut that down. Also, I put entertainment first. A lot of the guys I’m around are all about “real hip hop” but I think “real hip hop” can still be whack, so I just try to make entertaining music while maintaining a certain level of creativity and quality.
Q. Alright Baragon, thanks for letting our fans know a little bit about you. Any last words?
A: Shoutout to the Blue Heart Fam, first and foremost, especially Jacob Kondrath helped me put this together. This is their page as much as it is mine. Shout to Jake Aronwald who hooked me up with the page initially. Shoutout to my Mom, Brother, Sister & Father. Peace to the labels involved, Bizarro Records & Full Mettle, I got some big moves planned with them. Shoutout to my brothers who are 7he 7eam, once I make it we're gonna do it big. Shoutout to the 3 women who have & mostly likely will inspire every love song I ever write. Hope I didn't sound soft right there. Shoutout to the OG, DJ Bazooka Joe. He’s done a lot for me and I have to make him rich. Shoutout to the homies who support me heavy, Carlil, Torres, Tony Milovich, Jared. Peace to Professor Mike Jordan! Shout to Sam.I.am, Hex, Iconik, NoOther, all my ill producers. Peace to the blogs & radio shows that consistently show love, The Tortoise General, Valley Kings, Act Live, Ashes & Drinks, SFTU, No Ideas Original & Loyalty Radio. Shoutout to all my rapper homies, keep up the competition. Peace to DFA, Hillsyde & Turn Up Dynasty. Peace to all the OGs that paved the way for me too. My mixtape “Another Mans Treasure” is coming soon. JP’s mixtape coming soon. Peace
